Parker is a city located in Turner County, South Dakota, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,194 people lived there. It is the main town, or county seat, of Turner County.
Parker is easy to find because it's near two main roads. South Dakota State Highway 19 runs along its eastern side. South Dakota State Highway 44 borders its northern side. The city is about 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Chancellor. It's also about 42 miles (68 km) east of Parkston and 41 miles (66 km) south of Madison.

History of Parker
Parker was started in 1879. It became the county seat, which means it's the center for the county's government. In 1883, it officially became a city. The city was named after the maiden name of a railroad official's wife.

Turner County Fair
Parker is proud to host the Turner County Fair. This fair is the oldest county fair in all of South Dakota! It has been held almost every year since it first started in 1880. The fair now has its own website. This website shares information about the fair's fun attractions and its long history. It also tells about the old school houses in Turner County and what happens on the fairgrounds each year.
Education in Parker
The Parker School District began in 1889. It is known for its excellent education. In 2012, the district won the national Blue Ribbon Award for great academic achievements. The governor also recognized Parker as a distinguished school district for seven years in a row.
In 2022, a new elementary school building was added to the district. The school system continues to grow and improve.
Successful Sports Teams
The high school sports teams in Parker are called the 'Pheasants'. They have had many successful seasons. Gayle Hoover coached the boys' basketball teams from 1959 to 1993. When he retired, he was the winningest basketball coach in the state, with 577 wins!
Jill Christensen coached the volleyball program from 1983 to 2018. As of 2023, she is the winningest coach in the state for any sport, with 837 career wins! Both coaches were honored by being inducted into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame.
