Parksville's Past: How It Began
It's not exactly known when Parksville was first settled. However, a person named Lemuel Martin moved there in the year 1800. Later, in the early 1800s, William Parks and his son Elijah arrived.
William and Elijah Parks built mills and helped the area grow. They became more respected than Lemuel Martin. Martin wanted the hamlet to be called Martinville. But the people living there chose to name it Parksville, after the Parks family.
Trains Come to Parksville
In 1880, the New York, Ontario and Western Railroad built tracks to Parksville. Trains ran through the hamlet for many years. However, on March 29, 1957, the entire train line was closed down.
Changes to Route 17
For a long time, Parksville had the only street-level intersection on the New York State Route 17 expressway east of Hancock. This intersection was known as exit 98.
In 2012, a new bypass road was opened south of the old route. A bypass is a road built to go around a town or city. This change meant that exit 98 on Route 17 became a diamond interchange. This type of interchange helps traffic flow smoothly to Parksville's main business area.
