Parris, Texas was a small community that no longer exists. It was located in central Collin County, just south of Melissa. You could find it near the East Fork of the Trinity River. Today, Parris is known as a ghost town.
History of Parris
How Parris Began
The community of Parris got its name from a man named Thaddeus Parris. He was a veteran who fought in the Mexican–American War. In 1859, Mr. Parris built a special kind of mill in this area. It was called an "ox-turned gristmill". A gristmill uses power (in this case, from oxen) to grind grain, like corn or wheat, into flour.
A Center for Farmers
Having a gristmill was very important for farmers living nearby. It meant they didn't have to travel far to get their crops processed. Because of this mill, more and more settlers came to the area over the next ten years. Parris became a busy place where local farmers would gather and trade. It stayed an important community center for many years, from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Eventually, like many small towns, Parris faded away and became a ghost town.
