A Look Back in Time: Partlow's History

Early Days and Important Places

Long ago, this area was known as "Pea Ridge." It was a place where enslaved people were sold. A small part of the original structure from that time can still be found on Route 738. It is located between the Partlow Post Office and Mt. Olive Road.

A building called "The Partlow Tavern" was started by Captain John C. Partlow. It was on the same corner as the historical site mentioned above.

A Church with a Story

Partlow is also home to Wallers Baptist Church. This church was founded in 1769 and has a very interesting history. Its first pastor, John "Swearing Jack" Waller, faced many challenges. He was persecuted, or treated badly, for his religious beliefs by the Church of England.

Captain Partlow and Benjamin Waller, who was related to John Waller, also faced similar problems. They were even put in jail for a short time for holding religious services in their homes.

The Partlow Post Office

In the early 1800s, Benjamin Waller and John Partlow worked together. They helped create the first Partlow Post Office. This was an important step for the community. The family farm, which had been in the Partlow family for a long time, was sold in 2018. The last direct family member with the Partlow name, Anne Partlow Pemberton, passed away in 2004.

Partlow in Pop Culture

Partlow is known in popular culture because of a famous fictional story. It is the location of the plantation where the character Kunta Kinte was enslaved. This character is from a well-known book and TV series.
