History of Pasatiempo

Pasatiempo was created by a remarkable woman named Marion Hollins. She was a famous golfer who won the U.S. Amateur Golf title in 1921. She also led the US team in the 1932 Curtis Cup golf tournament.

Marion Hollins' Vision

In the 1920s, Marion Hollins moved to California. She helped create the Cypress Point golf club. She hired a famous golf course designer, Alister MacKenzie, for the project. MacKenzie even said she helped design one of the most famous holes at Cypress Point.

After this, Marion Hollins decided to build her own sports and housing community. On January 12, 1928, she announced her plans. She called the new area Pasatiempo Estates. It was just outside Santa Cruz, California.

Building the Community

Marion Hollins hired William Wurster, a well-known architect, to build her home. This house still stands today in Pasatiempo. She also brought in Alister MacKenzie again. He designed the golf course for Pasatiempo Golf Club. The course opened in September 1929. A famous golfer named Bobby Jones played in the opening match. Alister MacKenzie even built his own home in Pasatiempo, right next to the golf course.

Challenges and Legacy

Marion Hollins had big plans for Pasatiempo. She wanted to include a steeplechase course (for horse racing), riding paths, a park, and a beach club. However, the Great Depression made it hard to finish all her plans.

In 1940, Marion Hollins left Pasatiempo. She moved to Monterey, California, where she later passed away. Today, the Pasatiempo Golf Club is still very famous. It is known as one of the top 100 golf clubs. The community also still has the original clubhouse, which is now called the "Hollins House." There is also a swimming pool and tennis courts.
