Paskenta is a small, quiet community in Tehama County, California. It's not officially a city, but a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area the government counts for population information. Long ago, Paskenta was important because it had a busy lumber mill. The people who first lived here were the Nomlaki tribe, part of the federally recognized Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians. Paskenta sits about 726 feet (221 meters) above sea level. In 2020, about 110 people lived there.
The Story of Paskenta
Paskenta was originally home to the Nomlaki people, a Native American tribe. In their language, "Paskenta" (paskenti) means "under the hill" or "under the bank." Around 1860, people of European descent settled here. A post office opened in 1872, helping the community grow.
Between 1906 and 1909, the Paskenta Ranchería was created. This is a special area that is home to the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians. In 1980, Paskenta became the main populated area within a larger census-designated place (CDP), which was named after the town itself.
