Early Life and Acting Dreams
Patricia Hitchcock was born in London in 1928. Her parents were film director Alfred Hitchcock and film editor Alma Reville. In 1939, her family moved to Los Angeles, California.
From a young age, Patricia knew she wanted to be an actress. In the early 1940s, she started acting on stage. She also performed in summer stock theater. Her father helped her get a part in a Broadway play called Solitaire in 1942. She also played the main character in another Broadway play, Violet, in 1944.
After finishing high school in Los Angeles in 1947, she studied acting in London. She attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She also performed on the London stage.
Patricia Hitchcock's Film and TV Roles
In 1949, Patricia's parents came to London to make a movie called Stage Fright. This was her father's first British film after moving to Hollywood. Patricia did not know she would have a small part in the movie until her parents arrived. She looked a bit like the movie's star, Jane Wyman. Because of this, her father asked her to also be a stunt double for Wyman in scenes that involved "danger driving."
Working with Her Father
Patricia had supporting roles in three of her father's movies.
- In Stage Fright (1950), she played a fun acting student named Chubby Bannister. Chubby was one of Jane Wyman's school friends.
- In Strangers on a Train (1951), she played Barbara Morton. Barbara was the sister of Anne Morton, who was played by Ruth Roman.
- In Psycho (1960), she played Caroline. In this role, she offers to share her calming medicine with Marion Crane, played by Janet Leigh.
Patricia also appeared as an extra in her father's 1936 film Sabotage. She and her mother, Alma Reville, can be seen in the crowd watching a parade.
Other Acting Work
Beyond her father's films, Patricia worked on other projects. She acted in The Mudlark (1950), which starred Irene Dunne and Alec Guinness. In this film, she played a palace maid. She was also a maid in the first episode of the 1953 TV show Life with Father. She had a small part in DeMille's big movie The Ten Commandments (1956).
Patricia appeared in ten episodes of her father's TV show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents. She also worked on other TV shows, like Playhouse 90. Acting for her father was a highlight of her career. She paused her acting to raise her children.
Behind the Scenes Work
Patricia also worked as an executive producer for a documentary film. This film was called The Man on Lincoln's Nose (2000). It was about Robert F. Boyle and his important work in films.
For many years, she represented her family at Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine. She provided family photos and wrote the introduction for a book called Footsteps in the Fog: Alfred Hitchcock's San Francisco (2002). She also co-wrote a book about her mother, Alma Hitchcock: The Woman Behind the Man, which was published in 2003.
Family Life and Later Years
Patricia Hitchcock married Joseph E. O'Connell, Jr. on January 17, 1952. Their wedding took place at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. They chose this location because Joseph had family in Boston.
Patricia and Joseph had three daughters:
- Mary Alma Stone (born April 17, 1953)
- Teresa "Tere" Carrubba (born July 2, 1954)
- Kathleen "Katie" Fiala (born February 27, 1959)
Joseph O'Connell passed away in 1994.
Patricia Hitchcock died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Thousand Oaks, California. This happened on August 9, 2021, just one month after her 93rd birthday. Her daughter Teresa said that Patricia was always good at protecting her grandparents' memory. She made sure they were always remembered.
