The Patagonian opossum (Lestodelphys halli) is a unique little animal found only in Argentina. It's the only species in its group, Lestodelphys. This opossum is special because it lives further south than any other marsupial in the world! Even though it's a fascinating creature, scientists don't know much about it because it's quite rare and hard to find.

Where Does the Patagonian Opossum Live?

The Patagonian opossum makes its home in the southern parts of Argentina. It lives further south than any other living marsupial. Even though it's found in some areas of southern Argentina, it's one of the least known mammals in South America.

Scientists have seen them in places like the Monte Phytogeographic Province and the Patagonia Phytogeographic Province. However, they haven't been found in central Patagonia. This makes scientists think they can only live in the Patagonian steppe, which is a type of grassland. You might find these opossums in the province of La Pampa and near Choele Choel in northern Rio Negro Province.

What Does the Patagonian Opossum Look Like?

The Patagonian opossum looks a lot like mouse opossums. Scientists think they might have come from the same ancient animal group. In winter, both types of opossums get thicker tails. This is where they store fat, like a built-in food supply!

However, Patagonian opossums have some special features. Their skull and jaws are shorter, which helps them gather and eat food in a unique way. This shorter jaw, especially near their premolar teeth, gives them a super strong bite!

Special Features of the Patagonian Opossum

Compared to mouse opossums, the Patagonian opossum has a shorter snout. It also has wider cheekbones and crowded premolar teeth. These features are all part of its special design for hunting.

Their fur is short, fine, and soft. It's usually gray. The back is dark gray, while the sides are a lighter gray. Their shoulders are dark, and their cheeks and eye areas are white. Their ears are short and pink, with white fur at the base. Their tails are much shorter than their head and body.

What Does the Patagonian Opossum Eat?

Patagonian opossums belong to the Didelphidae family, which are opossums. Most opossums usually eat insects and fruits. But in the far-southern habitats where the Patagonian opossum lives, fruits and insects are hard to find.

Because of this shortage, the Patagonian opossum mainly eats birds and mice. One time, a Patagonian opossum was caught using a dead bird as bait! This made some researchers wonder if these opossums eat only birds.
