Patillas barrio-pueblo is the main town area of Patillas. It's like the heart of the municipality. In 2010, about 2,279 people lived here.
In Puerto Rico, just like in Spain, each municipality has a special area called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a main square, the town hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, fun festivals called Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in this central square.
The Town Square and Its Church
The central plaza, or town square, is a busy place. People gather here for fun events or just to hang out. It's a place where friends and families can meet from morning until night.
Long ago, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies guided how towns were built in Puerto Rico. These laws said the main square should be big enough for celebrations. They also said that streets nearby should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
Across from the main square in Patillas barrio-pueblo is a Catholic church. It is called the Parroquia Inmaculado Corazón de María. This means "Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish" in English. The first church was built in 1811. A new one was built in 1848, but a big hurricane in 1928 destroyed it. The church you see today was built in the 1930s. It was later updated in 1995 with new sections on the sides.
History of Patillas Pueblo
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the U.S. government counted the people living in Puerto Rico. They found that 1,590 people lived in Patillas Pueblo. Over the years, the number of people living here has changed.

In July 2020, a group called the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provided money. This money was for fixing up the main square in Patillas.
