Patrice Tlhopane Motsepe was born on 28 January 1962. He is a very successful South African businessman and a leader in football. He is known for being a billionaire and for his work in mining and sports.
Patrice Motsepe was born into the Tswana people. His father, Kgosi Augustine Motsepe, was a chief and a small business owner. Since March 2021, Patrice Motsepe has been the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This is a big role in African football.
He started a company called African Rainbow Minerals. This company deals with important metals like gold, platinum, and other metals used in industries. He is also on the boards of many other companies. For example, he is the non-executive chairman of Harmony Gold, which is one of the world's largest gold mining companies.
In 2003, he bought the football club Mamelodi Sundowns. He also joined "The Giving Pledge" in 2013. This means he promised to give away half of his money to help others. In January 2024, he was named one of Africa's richest people. Forbes magazine also listed him as one of the wealthiest people in the world in May 2024.

Early Life and Education
Patrice Motsepe's father, Kgosi Augustine Motsepe, was a chief and a former schoolteacher. He owned a small shop called a Spaza shop. This shop was popular with mine workers. Patrice learned a lot about business from his father at this shop. He also saw how mining worked up close.
He went to the University of Swaziland and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, he studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand. He chose to focus on mining law and business law.
Patrice Motsepe's Career
In 1994, Patrice Motsepe became the first black partner at the law firm Bowman Gilfillan. This was the same year Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president. The new government wanted to help black people start businesses. Motsepe then started his own company, Future Mining. This company offered services to mines, like cleaning gold dust. He also created a system where workers earned a basic salary plus a bonus if the company made a profit.
Mining Business Ventures
In 1997, when gold prices were low, Motsepe bought some gold mines from AngloGold. He got good deals that allowed him to pay back the money from the mines' future earnings. This company later became African Rainbow Minerals. He continued to make similar deals, buying more mines. In 1999, he formed Greene and Partners Investments with two friends.
After 1994, South Africa introduced laws called Black Economic Empowerment (BEE). These laws helped black people own more businesses. For a mining license, a company needed to have at least 26% black ownership. These laws helped Motsepe become a major player in the mining industry.
Since 2004, Motsepe has been a director at Absa Group and Sanlam. In 2002, African Rainbow Minerals joined with Harmony Gold Mining Ltd. and changed its name to ARMgold. Motsepe also founded other mining companies. He has been the chairman of Teal Exploration and Mining Incorporated since 2005. He is also the chairman of Ubuntu-Botho Investments and Harmony Gold Mining Co Ltd. He is the deputy chairman of Sanlam Ltd. He has also led South Africa's Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Financial Investments
In 2003, Motsepe started Ubuntu-Botho Investments (UBI). By 2019, he owned 55% of this company. In 2004, UBI made a BEE deal with Sanlam, an insurance and financial services company. This deal finished in 2014. UBI then owned 13.5% of Sanlam and had a bigger voting share.
UBI then created African Rainbow Capital (ARC). ARC has investments in over 40 companies. These include TymeBank, an industrial group called Afrimat, an agricultural company BKB, and a telecommunications company called Rain. ARC also has a small share in Alexander Forbes, which manages pension funds.
Renewable Energy Projects
In 2024, Motsepe started investing in renewable energy. This helps South Africa with its energy problems. He supported a company called GoSolr. This company rents solar panels and batteries to homes. GoSolr is a partnership between Motsepe's African Rainbow Capital Investments Ltd. and Standard Bank Group Ltd.. They plan to invest about $537 million to make more solar energy. They want to increase their energy production from 70 megawatts to about 500 megawatts in four years.
Sports Leadership
In 2003, Motsepe bought 51% of Mamelodi Sundowns F.C., a football club in the South African Premiership. He bought the rest of the club in 2004. At first, the team did not win much. But in recent years, Sundowns has been very successful in South African football. They have won the Premiership every year since the 2017–18 season.
In November 2019, Motsepe also bought a 37% share in the Blue Bulls Co., a rugby team. In November 2020, Motsepe announced he would run for president of CAF. He was elected on 12 March 2021. His son, Thlopie Motsepe, became the new chairman of Mamelodi Sundowns. On March 12, 2025, Patrice Motsepe was re-elected as president of the Confederation of African Football.
Business Advocacy
In 2011, he became the temporary chairman of the Black Business Council. He also helped start and was a former president of Business Unity SA (BUSA). This group helps businesses in South Africa.
Awards and Recognition
Patrice Motsepe won South Africa's Best Entrepreneur Award in 2002. In 2004, he was voted 39th among the "Great South Africans" by the South African Broadcasting Corporation. Forbes magazine has often listed him as one of the world's wealthiest people. In 2017, Forbes honored him as one of the "100 Greatest Living Business Minds" in the world. In 2020, he was ranked as the 1,307th-wealthiest person globally.
Personal Life
Patrice Motsepe is married to Precious Moloi. She is a doctor and a fashion entrepreneur. They have three children. His sisters are Tshepo Motsepe and Bridgette Radebe. His brothers-in-law are President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister Jeff Radebe.
