Patricia is a small, unincorporated community in Dawson County, Texas, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own official city government. In 2000, about 60 people lived in Patricia.
History of Patricia
Patricia was started in 1923. It was the main office for the Birge-Forbes Land Company, which owned a lot of land nearby. A local historian named Matthew C. Lindsey helped sell some of this land to farmers. He also built a cotton gin in the area. A cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds.
When a post office opened in 1923, the community's first name, Natalie, was changed to Patricia. This change likely happened to honor the granddaughter of one of the company's owners. Another reason for the name change was to avoid confusion with Natalia, another town in Texas. The post office stayed open until 1980. From 1948 to 2000, the population of Patricia remained at 60 people. There were also about seven businesses serving the community. The population was still 60 in 2010.
Patricia has experienced a few small tornadoes. On April 23, 2008, a brief tornado was seen south of Patricia. It was an EF0 tornado, which is the weakest kind, and it caused no damage. A month later, on May 27, 2008, another brief EF0 tornado happened northwest of Patricia, also causing no damage. On May 26, 2014, an EF0 tornado struck Patricia, but it did not cause any damage either.
