A Hero in the Second World War
Patrick Porteous joined the Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1937. By 1940, he was promoted to lieutenant. In 1942, he was a temporary major. He was 24 years old at the time.
The Dieppe Raid
On August 19, 1942, Major Porteous was part of the Dieppe Raid. This was a big attack by Allied forces on the German-occupied port of Dieppe in France. His job was to help coordinate two groups of soldiers. Their mission was to attack strong German coastal guns.
Incredible Bravery
During the first part of the attack, Major Porteous was shot. The bullet went through his hand and into his arm. Even though he was hurt, he fought back. He disarmed the enemy soldier and saved a British sergeant.
Soon after, the other group of soldiers got stuck. Their leader was killed, and another officer was also killed. Major Porteous quickly took charge. He ran across open ground, even though there was heavy gunfire.
He rallied the soldiers and led them in a charge. They attacked the German position with bayonets. Major Porteous was shot again, this time in the leg. But he kept going. He continued until the last of the German guns were destroyed. He finally collapsed from losing too much blood.
His amazing bravery and leadership inspired everyone. He showed incredible dedication to his duty.
After the War
Even with his serious injuries, Major Porteous made a full recovery. He continued his military career. He served in places like Palestine, Germany, and Singapore.
He was promoted to major in 1950. Later, he became a lieutenant colonel in 1959. He eventually reached the rank of colonel before retiring in 1970. In 2000, he had the honor of being in the leading car at the Queen Mother's 100th Birthday Parade. He passed away later that year.
