Patrick Joseph Barry was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in Ireland in 1868. He later became a bishop in Florida, USA. Bishop Barry led the Diocese of St. Augustine from 1922 until he passed away in 1940.

The Life of Bishop Patrick Barry
Early Years in Ireland
Patrick Barry was born on November 15, 1868. His family lived in County Clare, Ireland. He was one of 18 children! After going to a local school, he attended Mungret College in Limerick, Ireland, starting in 1887. He graduated from the Royal University of Ireland.
In 1890, Patrick decided to study to become a priest. He went to St. Patrick's College in Carlow, Ireland. While he was studying, he was asked to serve the Catholic community in Florida, USA. This was a special mission for him.
Becoming a Priest
Patrick Barry was made a priest on June 9, 1895. Bishop Michael Comerford ordained him in Ireland. After becoming a priest, Barry moved to Florida. He started his work at Immaculate Conception Parish in Jacksonville.
He also served as a chaplain for the US military. This was during the Spanish–American War. After the war, he became a pastor at St. Monica's Parish in Palatka, Florida. He worked there from 1903 to 1913. Later, he became the leader of St. Augustine's Cathedral. He also served as a main helper for the bishop from 1917 to 1921.
Leading as Bishop of St. Augustine
On February 22, 1922, Pope Pius XI chose Patrick Barry to be the fifth bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine. He officially became a bishop on May 3, 1922. Archbishop Michael Curley performed the ceremony.
Bishop Barry did many important things for the church in Florida. In 1931, he started a special yearly trip. People would visit the shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Leche. This shrine is at the Mission Nombre de Dios in St. Augustine. He wanted people to remember the long history of the Catholic Church in St. Augustine.
In June 1932, Bishop Barry traveled to Dublin, Ireland. He attended a big meeting called the World Eucharistic Congress. In 1940, he helped start Barry University in Miami Shores. He founded the university with his sister, Mother M. Gerald Barry, and his brother, Father William Barry.
Bishop Patrick Barry passed away on August 12, 1940. He was 71 years old. He died from heart disease in Jacksonville.
