Patrick G. O’Shea (born around 1957) is an important Irish-American scientist and academic. From February 2017 to September 2020, he was the fifteenth president of University College Cork (UCC). This means he was the main leader of the university. Before that, he was a vice president and chief research officer at the University of Maryland.

Early Life and Education

Patrick O'Shea was born in Cork, Ireland. He went to secondary school at Coláiste Chríost Rí. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), from University College Cork. Later, he studied at the University of Maryland in the United States. There, he received his Master of Science (M.S.) and Ph.D. degrees. All of his degrees were in the field of physics.

Academic Career

At the University of Maryland, O'Shea was a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He also worked as an affiliate professor in the Department of Physics. Before these roles, he was the head, or "chair," of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He also directed the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics.

Expertise and Recognition

O'Shea is an expert in several science areas. These include electromagnetics, which is about how electricity and magnetism work together. He also specializes in electron-accelerators and free-electron lasers. These are advanced technologies used in scientific research.

He has been recognized for his important work. He is a "Fellow" of several major scientific groups. These include the American Physical Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Being a Fellow means he is highly respected by his peers in these fields. He was also named a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher at the University of Maryland.

President of University College Cork

On June 14, 2016, Patrick O'Shea was chosen to be the fifteenth president of University College Cork. He officially started this role on February 1, 2017. As president, he was responsible for leading the university. He oversaw its academic programs, research, and overall operations. He retired from this position on September 15, 2020. His retirement had been announced in July 2020.

Personal Life

Patrick O'Shea married his wife, Miriam, in 1987. They have one son named Ronan.
