Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Patrick Hamilton (died 1520) was a Scottish nobleman. He was the son of James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton. His half-brother was James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran.

Royal Recognition

In January 1513, King James IV of Scotland made an important decision. He declared that because the 1st Earl of Arran had no direct heirs at that time, his son, James Hamilton of Finnart, and his two half-brothers, Patrick Hamilton of Kincavil and John Hamilton of Broomhill, would be considered legitimate. This meant they could legally inherit the Hamilton family lands. Patrick bought a house in Linlithgow in February 1500. His son James later sold this house in 1531.

Mining and Conflict

In March 1516, Patrick Hamilton received a special permission from the young King James V of Scotland and the Governor, Regent Albany. This permission allowed him to mine for gold, silver, tin, and other metals in areas like Crawford Moor.

In 1520, a big fight happened in Edinburgh. It was called 'Cleanse the Causeway'. This street brawl was caused by a rivalry between the Hamilton family and the Douglas family. Sadly, the fight went badly for the Hamiltons. Sir Patrick and about 70 other people were killed. It was reported that Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus personally killed Patrick.

His Family

Sir Patrick's wife was Margaret Stewart. After his death, she planned to marry a man named John Hamilton. However, this marriage was later cancelled between 1530 and 1532.

His oldest son and heir was Sir James Hamilton of Kincavil. Another younger son, also named Patrick, became very important in Scottish history. He was one of the first people in Scotland to follow the ideas of Martin Luther, which led to the Scottish Reformation. In 1528, he became a martyr for his beliefs.

Sir Patrick also had a daughter who supported the Protestant faith. For a time, she was married to the captain of Dunbar Castle. She had visited London and met Jane Seymour, who was Queen of England. In March 1539, she was living in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
