Patrick Henry Mall is a popular shopping mall located in Newport News, Virginia. It's a great place to shop, eat, and have fun! You can find it right off Interstate 64 and Jefferson Avenue. The mall has many stores, including big ones like Dillard's, Dick's Sporting Goods, J. C. Penney, and Macy's. In 2017, the Old Navy store moved to a different shopping area nearby.

A Look Back: The Mall's History

Patrick Henry Mall opened its doors in 1987. It was the third large, enclosed shopping mall in the Peninsula area. The mall got its name from the Patrick Henry International Airport, which is very close by.

Before the mall was built, this land was a big dairy farm. A local family called the Yoders, who were Mennonite, ran the farm.

When it first opened, Patrick Henry Mall was special because it was the first mall in the region to have a food court. This is a place where you can find many different restaurants in one spot!

How the Stores Changed Over Time

The company that built the mall was called Crown American. When the mall first opened, it had three main "anchor" stores. Anchor stores are usually very large stores that attract many shoppers to the mall. These first anchor stores were Hess's, Leggett, and Bradlees.

  • In 1988, the Bradlees store changed and became a store called Uptons.
  • Later, in 1995, Hess's sold its store. It became a Proffitt's store.
  • By 1998, both the Proffitt's and the Leggett stores changed again. They both became Dillard's stores.

Growing Bigger: Mall Expansions

The mall kept growing! In 1998, a new section was added. This new part brought in another big store, Hecht's. Hecht's later changed its name to Macy's in 2006.

The Uptons store closed in 1999. Then, in 2000, a J. C. Penney store opened in that spot.

In 2004, Dillard's made some changes. They moved all their operations into the building that used to be Leggett. The old Hess's/Proffitt's/Dillard's Home Store building was then taken down.

Between 2005 and 2006, the mall expanded even more! This big expansion added new stores like Dick's Sporting Goods and Borders Books & Music. It also brought in popular places like New York & Company, Red Robin (a restaurant), and new locations for stores that were already there, such as American Eagle Outfitters, Bath & Body Works, Victoria's Secret, Express, and Hallmark Cards.

New Fun and Games

The Borders bookstore closed in early 2011. In October 2012, a Forever 21 store opened in that space.

In September 2017, something exciting was announced! Tilt Studio decided to open a new location at the mall. This fun place includes a J.P. Pepperoni restaurant, a mini bowling alley, a one-story laser tag arena, and many other games. Tilt Studio officially opened on December 18, 2017, in the area where the AMC 7 movie theater and Old Navy used to be.
