Patrick James Leonard (born May 19, 1847 – died January 1, 1899) was a brave United States Army sergeant. He earned the Medal of Honor during the Indian Wars. This is the highest award for bravery a soldier can receive. For many years, people thought he had won the Medal of Honor twice. But it was later found that another Irishman, named Patrick Thomas Leonard, had also received the award.
Early Life and Background
Patrick James Leonard was born in County Meath, a place in Ireland. Not much is known about his early life.
Military Service and Bravery
Patrick Leonard joined the army in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a sergeant in the 2nd U.S. Cavalry. On May 15, 1870, he showed great courage near the Little Blue River.
He and four other soldiers were looking for horses that had wandered off. Suddenly, about 50 Native American warriors attacked them. This is called an ambush. Even though they were greatly outnumbered, Leonard and his group fought back bravely. They managed to stop the attack.
After the fight, Sergeant Leonard helped two women and a child get to the nearest safe settlement. For his bravery that day, he received the Medal of Honor on June 22, 1870. The other four soldiers with him also received this special award. They were Private Thomas Hubbard, Private Heth Canfield, Private Michael Himmelsback, and Private George W. Thompson.
His Legacy
Patrick James Leonard passed away on January 1, 1899. He was buried in Saint Joseph Cemetery, in New Almelo, Kansas. He is remembered for his courage and service to his country.
