He received it for his actions during the Indian Wars. For many years, people thought he had received the Medal of Honor twice. But later, it was found that another soldier with a similar name, Patrick James Leonard, had also earned the award.

Patrick Thomas Leonard was born in 1828. His hometown was Broadford, in County Clare, Ireland. His parents were John and Mary Leonard.

Patrick Thomas Leonard married Ellen Connaughton. They had five children together. Their children were Mary, Patrick Thomas Leonard Jr., Margaret, John, and Ellen M.

Military Service and Bravery

Patrick Leonard joined the United States Army. He enlisted at a place called Camp Three Forks in Idaho Territory. He served there in the late 1860s and early 1870s.

He showed great courage on April 28, 1876. This happened near Grace Creek, close to Fort Hartsuff in Nebraska. For his brave actions that day, he was given the Medal of Honor. This special award was given to him on August 26, 1876. By the time he passed away, he had been promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Later Life and Passing

Patrick Thomas Leonard died on March 1, 1905. He was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery. This cemetery is located in Lansing, Kansas.
