Patrick Casserly's Life Story

Patrick Casserly was born in a town called Mullingar in County Westmeath, Ireland. His parents were Patrick Casserly and Elizabeth Horan.

In 1824, he moved from Ireland to the United States. He made his home in New York City. There, he became one of the very first teachers for Roman Catholic students.

He worked as an editor for a newspaper called the New York Weekly Register. Patrick Casserly also translated important books from other languages into English. He translated "Sublime and Beautiful" by Longinus and "Of the Little Garden of Roses and Valley of Lillies" by Thomas à Kempis.

He also helped prepare school books. For example, he edited Jacob's Greek Reader in 1836. This book was so popular that it was printed sixteen times! He also wrote a textbook about Latin Prosody in 1845. This book is still used in many schools today that teach classical subjects.
