Eugene Casserly (born November 13, 1820 – died June 14, 1883) was an important person in American history. He was born in Ireland but moved to the United States when he was very young. Eugene Casserly worked as a journalist, a lawyer, and a politician. He is best known for serving as a U.S. Senator for California.

Eugene Casserly's Life and Career

Early Life and Education

Eugene Casserly was born on November 13, 1820, in Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland. When he was just two years old, in 1822, he moved to the United States with his parents. They settled in New York City.

His father, Patrick S. Casserly, was a scholar and helped Eugene prepare for college. Eugene went to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and graduated. After college, he decided to study law. In 1844, he passed his exams and became a lawyer, starting his practice in New York City.

From Journalism to Law

Before moving to San Francisco, California, Eugene Casserly worked for the New York City government. He was a corporation counsel from 1846 to 1847.

He also had a career in journalism. He became the editor of a newspaper called Freeman's Journal. He also wrote for other newspapers in different cities.

In 1850, Eugene Casserly moved to California. There, he started his own newspapers, including the Public Balance and the True Balance. In 1851, he was chosen as the State printer for California. After this, he stopped working in journalism and went back to being a lawyer.

In 1854, Eugene Casserly married Teresa Doyle. They had three children together: two sons and a daughter.

Serving in the U.S. Senate

In 1868, Eugene Casserly was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate. He represented California. He started his term in March 1869.

As a U.S. Senator, he worked on important committees. He was the chairman of the Committee on Pacific Railroads. This committee dealt with railroads that crossed the country. He also led the Committee on Engrossed Bills. This committee made sure that new laws were written correctly.

Eugene Casserly served in the Senate until November 29, 1873, when he decided to resign.

Later Life and Legacy

After leaving the Senate, Eugene Casserly returned to San Francisco. He continued to practice law. He also took part in the California Constitutional Convention in 1878 and 1879. This was a meeting to write new rules for the state of California.

Eugene Casserly passed away in San Francisco on June 14, 1883. He was first buried in Calvary Cemetery. Later, in 1904, his remains were moved to Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, California.
