Patrick Martin Stumph (born April 27, 1984), known to the world as Patrick Stump, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the famous rock band Fall Out Boy.
Stump is famous for his powerful voice, which Billboard magazine called "one of the best voices in pop-punk." With Fall Out Boy, he has had huge success, including four albums that reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Some of their biggest hits include "Sugar, We're Goin Down" and "Centuries."
When Fall Out Boy took a break in 2009, Stump worked on his own music. He released a solo album called Soul Punk in 2011. Early Life and Beginnings
Patrick Stump was born in Evanston, Illinois. His father was a folk singer, and his mother was an accountant. When he was young, his parents divorced. He grew up in Glenview, Illinois, and attended Glenbrook South High School.
Before he was a famous singer, Stump's first instrument was the drums. He played in several local punk bands in the Chicago area. Some of his biggest musical heroes growing up were Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello, and Nat King Cole.
Career with Fall Out Boy
In 2001, guitarist Joe Trohman met Stump, and they discovered they had similar taste in music. Trohman introduced Stump to bassist Pete Wentz. Stump first tried out to be the drummer for their new band, but he soon became the lead singer and guitarist instead. This new band became Fall Out Boy.
Stump became the main music composer for the band, writing the melodies for the songs, while Wentz wrote the lyrics. In 2003, the band released their first full album, Take This to Your Grave. That same year, Stump decided to drop the "h" from his last name (Stumph) to make it easier for people to pronounce.
Mainstream Success
Fall Out Boy's big break came with their 2005 album, From Under the Cork Tree. It became a huge hit, selling over 2.5 million copies. The singles "Sugar, We're Goin Down" and "Dance, Dance" were played all over the radio and made the band famous.
Their next album, Infinity on High (2007), was even more successful. It went straight to number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The lead single, "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race", became one of their most well-known songs. The band toured all over the world, playing in huge arenas.
In 2008, they released the album Folie à Deux. After touring for the album, the band announced in late 2009 that they were taking a break to work on other projects.
Return of the Band
On February 4, 2013, Fall Out Boy surprised fans by announcing their return. They released a new album, Save Rock and Roll, which became their second album to hit number one. The lead single, "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)", was a massive hit.
The band continued their success with more number-one albums, including American Beauty/American Psycho (2015) and Mania (2018). They have continued to tour and release new music, including the album So Much (for) Stardust in 2023. In 2018, they played a huge show at Wrigley Field in their hometown of Chicago, a major milestone in their career.
Solo Career and Other Projects
During Fall Out Boy's break from 2010 to 2012, Stump focused on his own music. He wrote, performed, and produced an entire album by himself called Soul Punk, which was released in 2011. The album showed a different side of his musical style, with more soul and R&B influences. He toured across the U.S. and Europe to support his solo work.
Even while in Fall Out Boy, Stump has always been busy with other projects. He is a talented record producer and has helped many other artists and bands create their albums.
Writing Music for Film and TV
In recent years, Stump has found a new passion: composing music for movies and television shows. He wrote the music for the roller coaster The Incredible Hulk Coaster at the Islands of Adventure theme park in Orlando.
He has also composed the score for several films, including the comedy Changeland and the animated movie Gnome Alone. He wrote the theme song for the Disney Junior show Spidey and His Amazing Friends and has composed music for the Netflix series Dead End: Paranormal Park and Hot Wheels Let's Race. Stump has said that composing music for films feels like his "real solo record."
Acting and Voice Work
Besides music, Stump has also tried acting. He has appeared in TV shows like Law & Order and House. He and his Fall Out Boy bandmates also made a cameo appearance in the 2008 movie ... Drive.
He has also done voice acting. He voiced the character Ruberiot in the Disney XD cartoon Star vs. the Forces of Evil and even sang a song for the show. He and his band also appeared as themselves in the Cartoon Network show Teen Titans Go!. In 2025, it was announced that he would be the voice of Abel in the second season of Hazbin Hotel.
Personal Life
Stump married his longtime girlfriend, Elisa Yao, in 2012. They have a son named Declan, who was born in 2014, and another child. The family lives together in Chicago.
Stump has shared that he has synesthesia, a condition where senses get mixed up. For him, this means he sees colors when he hears music. He is also a member of the Chicago Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the organization that presents the Grammy Awards.
