Patrick Walsh (born January 1, 1840 – died March 19, 1899) was an important American politician and a journalist. He served as a United States Senator for Georgia. He also became the mayor of Augusta, Georgia.

Early Life and Education
Patrick Walsh was born in Ballingarry, Ireland, in 1840. When he was 12 years old, in 1852, he moved to the United States with his parents. They settled in Charleston, South Carolina.
Learning a Trade and Studying
In Charleston, Patrick started working as a printer's apprentice. This meant he learned the printing trade. While working, he also went to night school to continue his education. In 1859, he was able to attend Georgetown College in Washington, D.C. He studied there until the American Civil War began.
Career in Politics and Journalism
When the Civil War started in 1861, Patrick Walsh returned to Charleston. He joined the state militia to fight for the Confederacy. He was a lieutenant in the First Regiment, Carolina Rifle Militia.
Becoming a Journalist
In 1862, he moved to Augusta, Georgia. There, he became an editor for the Augusta Chronicle newspaper. He worked for this and other newspapers.
Serving in Government
After the war, Patrick Walsh entered politics. He was elected as a State Representative in the Georgia General Assembly. He served from 1872 to 1876 as a member of the Democratic Party.
In 1884, he was chosen as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. This is a big meeting where the party chooses its candidate for president. He also worked on the World's Columbian Fair Commission. This commission helped organize a huge world's fair in Chicago.
United States Senator
In 1894, the Governor of Georgia chose Patrick Walsh to fill a vacant seat in the United States Senate. He served as a Democratic senator from April 2, 1894, to March 3, 1895.
Mayor of Augusta
Later in his life, Patrick Walsh was elected mayor of Augusta, Georgia. He served as mayor from 1897 until his death.
Family Life
In 1866, Patrick Walsh married Anna Isabella McDonnald. Anna was born in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Her father, John E. McDonnald, was a merchant from Charleston, South Carolina. Anna's mother was from London, England, and moved to the United States when she was about ten years old.
Later Life and Legacy
Patrick Walsh passed away on March 19, 1899. He was buried in the City Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia. He is remembered for his work as a journalist and his service in various government roles.
