Patrick Zwaanswijk (born on January 17, 1975) is a former professional football player from the Netherlands. He used to play as a central defender. Patrick started his football journey in the Ajax Youth Academy. He retired from playing professionally in 2013 after a great career with several clubs. These clubs included Ajax FC, FC Utrecht, Oita Trinita, NAC Breda, and Central Coast Mariners FC.

After his professional career, he continued to play for local teams in Australia. He even captained Southern & Ettalong United and played for Terrigal United. Patrick is married to Leah Maree Zwaanswijk. He has two children, Dominique Louise Zwaanswijk and Angelo Zwaanswijk, from his first marriage. Since 2015, he has been living in North Avoca, Australia.

Patrick's Football Journey

Patrick Zwaanswijk played for 11 seasons in the top Dutch football league, called the Eredivisie. He spent six years with FC Utrecht and five years with NAC Breda.

Starting with FC Utrecht

Patrick began his professional career with FC Utrecht. He played his first Eredivisie game against Willem II. During his six years at Utrecht, his team reached the finals of the Amstel Cup three times. They also won the KNVB Cup twice, in 2003 and 2004.

Playing in Japan

After his time at Utrecht, Patrick moved to Japan in 2004. He joined a team called Oita Trinita in the J-League. He played there for about 14 months. However, his family missed Europe, so they decided to move back to the Netherlands.

Returning to the Netherlands

Patrick returned to the Netherlands and joined NAC Breda in 2005. He played in the Eredivisie with them until 2010. In 2008, NAC Breda finished in third place, which meant they qualified for the UEFA Champions League, a very important European competition. Patrick played 189 games for NAC Breda across different competitions.

Moving to Australia

In 2010, Patrick Zwaanswijk moved to Australia. He joined an A-League club called Central Coast Mariners FC. He scored his first goal for the Mariners on October 2, 2010. It was a winning goal against North Queensland Fury FC.

In May 2012, Patrick signed a new contract to stay with the Mariners for another year. He played a big role in the 2013 A-League Grand Final on April 22, 2013. He scored the first goal of the game against Western Sydney Wanderers FC with a header from a corner kick. The Mariners won the game 2-0. After this big win, Patrick thought about retiring from playing football.

In May 2013, Patrick announced that he would retire from playing after the Mariners' game in the 2013 AFC Champions League. However, he decided to stay with the Mariners. He became a coach for their youth team, the Central Coast Mariners Academy, in the National Youth League.

Patrick's Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Patrick Zwaanswijk continued his career as a coach.

Early Coaching Roles

Patrick coached the Central Coast Mariners Academy youth team. Later, in November 2018, he was appointed as the head coach of Hills United FC. This team plays in the National Premier Leagues NSW 2.

In September 2020, Patrick became the head coach of Western Sydney Wanderers FC Youth. This team also plays in the National Premier Leagues NSW.

Current Coaching Role

In August 2022, Patrick Zwaanswijk was named the head coach of the men's first-grade team for Manly United FC. He started this role for the 2023 season and continues to coach them.

Patrick Zwaanswijk won several important trophies during his playing career.

With FC Utrecht

  • KNVB Cup: He won this cup twice, in the 2002–03 and 2003–04 seasons.

With Central Coast Mariners

  • A-League Champions: His team won the championship in the 2012–13 season.
  • A-League Premiership: They also finished first in the regular season, winning the Premiership in 2011–12.
