The Patten Building is a very old and important building in Cherryfield, Maine. It was built way back in 1865. This building is a great example of a special kind of architecture called Italianate. For a long time, it has been a well-known place for shops in the small town of Cherryfield.
Exploring the Patten Building
The Patten Building is right in the middle of Cherryfield village. You can find it on the east side of Main Street. This street is also known as Maine State Route 193. It's just a short distance north of where Main Street meets United States Route 1.
What the Building Looks Like
The Patten Building is a two-and-a-half story structure. It is made of wood and has a roof that points forward, called a gabled roof. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboard siding. The roof has a wide edge, or cornice, with fancy paired brackets and small tooth-like decorations.
The first floor of the front of the building has three main sections. On the right, there's a shop area with a double door and a big display window. On the left, a single door leads upstairs. Each section has flat, column-like decorations called pilasters. Above these, you can see decorative wooden panels with more brackets. A decorated edge separates the first and second floors.
The second floor has pilasters at its corners. It also has two windows with carved decorations above them. The very top part of the building, the attic, has one window with similar decorations.
History of the Patten Building
Frank Patten built this building in 1865. He used it to make and sell boots and shoes. Over the years, the building has been home to many different businesses. It has been a barbershop where people got their hair cut. It was also a meat market where people bought food.
The Patten Building is special because it's a rare example of Italianate style for a business building in this area. Today, the local historical society owns this important building. It helps us remember the past of Cherryfield.
The Patten Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 1978. This means it is recognized as a very important historical place.
