Paul Barber (born Patrick Barber on March 18, 1951) is an English actor from Toxteth, Liverpool. He has been acting for over 45 years. He is most famous for playing Denzil in the TV show Only Fools and Horses. He also played Horse in the popular movie The Full Monty.

Paul Barber's Early Life

Paul Barber had a tough start to life. He was taken into care when he was seven years old. This happened after his mother passed away from tuberculosis. His father, who was from Sierra Leone, also died when Paul and his siblings were very young.

Paul Barber's Acting Career

Paul Barber started his acting journey on stage in a musical called Hair. His first big TV role was in 1974 in a show called Lucky. He then played a tough gang boss named Malleson in the BBC series Gangsters.

Famous TV Roles

Barber has appeared in many British TV shows. He was in To the Manor Born (1979) and Minder (1980). His most well-known TV role is Denzil in Only Fools and Horses. He played this character from 1983 to 2003. He even made a guest appearance in The Green Green Grass, a spin-off from Only Fools and Horses. Fans still love to meet him at conventions for the show.

In 1991, he played a football coach in Alive and Kicking. He also appeared in Cracker and Brookside in 1994. Later, he had small parts in the soap opera Coronation Street in 2004 and 2008. He also appeared in Terry Pratchett's Going Postal (2010) and White Van Man (2012).

More recently, Paul Barber has been in other TV shows. He played Captain in Sinbad (2012) and Captain Jack Parrot in Death in Paradise (2014). He also appeared in Home from Home (2016 and 2018). In 2017, he guest-starred in The Dumping Ground, a Tracy Beaker spin-off, playing a homeless man. He has also appeared in Casualty multiple times, playing different characters.

Paul Barber's Film Work

Paul Barber has also acted in several movies. He had small roles in the film versions of Porridge (1979) and The Long Good Friday (1980).

His most famous movie role was playing Horse, one of the steelworkers, in the 1997 film The Full Monty. He worked again with his Full Monty co-star Robert Carlyle in the film The 51st State (2001). In 2006, he starred in Dead Man's Cards, playing a head doorman in Liverpool.

In the 2014 film One Night in Istanbul, Barber played a taxi driver who takes his son to watch Liverpool Football Club play in Turkey. He also appeared in Gloves Off (2017) and the action thriller Renegades (2022). His latest film is the horror movie The Baby in the Basket (2024).

Paul Barber's Personal Life

In July 2011, Paul Barber received a special award. Liverpool John Moores University gave him an honorary doctorate for his amazing work in acting. He currently lives in Clacton, Essex.
