Paul Barber (born Patrick Barber on 18 March 1951) is an English actor from Liverpool. He has been acting for over 45 years and is famous for playing Denzil in the TV show Only Fools and Horses and Horse in the movie The Full Monty.

A Challenging Start

Paul Barber had a difficult childhood. He was born in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. His mother, Margret, sadly passed away from tuberculosis when he was only seven years old. His father had died when Paul and his siblings were very young.

After his mother's death, Paul was placed in a children's home. He has said that he had a hard time there, but he used these experiences to help him become a powerful actor.

Acting Career

Paul Barber's acting journey began on stage in the musical Hair. His first big television role was in 1974 in a show called Lucky, which was set in his hometown of Liverpool.

Famous Television Roles

Over the years, Paul has appeared in many popular British TV shows. One of his most beloved roles was as the friendly lorry driver Denzil in the classic comedy Only Fools and Horses. He appeared in the show from 1983 to 2003.

  • The Brothers McGregor, where he had a main role in the mid-1980s.
  • Cracker (1994), where he played a social worker.
  • Brookside (1994), as the character Greg Salter.

  • The Dumping Ground (2017), a show for young people where he guest-starred as a homeless man named George.

In 2023, he returned to his famous role as Horse in the TV series version of The Full Monty.

Paul Barber is also famous for his role in the 1997 hit movie The Full Monty. He played Barrington "Horse" Mitchell, one of the group of friends who decide to become performers. The film was a huge success all over the world.

He also acted alongside his Full Monty co-star Robert Carlyle in the crime film The 51st State (2001). Some of his other film roles include small parts in Porridge (1979) and The Long Good Friday (1980). In 2014, he starred in the movie One Night in Istanbul about two fathers taking their sons to a big football match.

Personal Life

In July 2011, Paul Barber was given an honorary doctorate from Liverpool John Moores University. This award recognized his amazing contribution to acting. He currently lives in Clacton, Essex.
