Paul Delaune: A Doctor's Journey

Early Life and Education

Paul Delaune was born in London. He was likely related to Gideon Delaune, who was a very rich pharmacist. He also had family connections to Dr. Argent, who was the president of the Royal College of Physicians eight times.

Paul Delaune went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he earned his first degree in 1608 and a master's degree in 1611. He then traveled to Italy and earned his medical degree from the University of Padua in 1614. He also received a medical degree from the University of Cambridge in 1615.

A Career in Medicine

After his studies, Delaune joined the Royal College of Physicians, which was a very important group for doctors. He became a candidate in 1616 and a full member, called a fellow, in 1618.

When Henry Cary, 1st Viscount Falkland was made the King's representative in Ireland (called the Lord Deputy of Ireland), Delaune went with him as his personal doctor. He lived in Dublin for several years.

In 1642, Delaune became an "elect" of the College of Physicians, which meant he was chosen for a special position. In 1643, he became a "senior censor," helping to make sure doctors followed the rules.

Serving the Commonwealth

In 1643, Paul Delaune was chosen to be the professor of medicine at Gresham College. This happened after the previous professor, Dr. Thomas Winston, left the country. Gresham College was a place where people could learn about different subjects, including medicine.

Later that year, the College of Physicians suggested Delaune as one of three doctors to serve the parliamentary army. This army was led by Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex during a time of great change in England.

Later Years and Adventures

In 1652, Dr. Winston returned to England and got his old job back at Gresham College. This meant Delaune had to leave his teaching position. For a while, Delaune faced some financial difficulties.

However, he soon received a new important role from Oliver Cromwell, who was a powerful leader in England at the time. Delaune became the chief doctor for the English fleet (navy). He sailed with the fleet first to Hispaniola and then to Jamaica. He was probably there when Jamaica was captured by the English in 1653.

Not much more is known about Paul Delaune after this time. According to a doctor named Benjamin Hamey, Paul Delaune passed away in December 1654.
