He is best known for his stories about Native American cultures and traditions. His book The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses even won a special award called the Caldecott Medal in 1979.

Paul Goble's Life Story

Paul Goble was born in Haslemere, England, on September 27, 1933. He grew up in Oxford, where his father built musical instruments called harpsichords. His mother was also a professional musician.

Goble studied art at the Central School of Art in London. After finishing school, he worked as an art teacher and even designed furniture. His very first children's book, Red Hawk's Account of Custer's Last Battle, came out in 1969.

Moving to America

In 1977, Paul Goble moved to the Black Hills in South Dakota, USA. This was a big change for him. He was even adopted by a Native American leader, Chief Edgar Red Cloud.

Living in South Dakota greatly influenced his work. He became very interested in the culture of the Plains Indian tribes. Many of his later children's books shared these amazing stories.

Award-Winning Books

In 1979, Paul Goble received the prestigious Caldecott Medal. This award is given each year to the artist of the most distinguished American children's picture book. He won it for his book The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, which was published in 1978.

Most of his books retell ancient stories from different Native Nations. He told these tales from the viewpoints of various tribes. Paul Goble became a U.S. citizen in 1984. He passed away on January 5, 2017, at the age of 83.

A book about his life, Paul Goble: Storyteller, was written by professor Gregory Bryan. It was published shortly after Goble's death.
