Paul Shane (born George Frederick Speight; 19 June 1940 – 16 May 2013) was a famous British actor and comedian. He was best known for his roles on television. Many people remember him as Ted Bovis in Hi-de-Hi!, a popular BBC comedy show from the 1980s.

Early Life and First Jobs
Paul Shane was born on 19 June 1940 in Thrybergh, a town near Rotherham in England. After finishing school in 1955, he worked as a miner at Silverwood Colliery.
In 1967, he had an accident at the mine and hurt his back. Because of this injury, he had to stop working as a miner. He then decided to become a full-time entertainer. Before this, he had already been performing part-time for ten years in pubs and clubs.
Becoming a Star
Paul Shane first started performing as a singer in Rotherham. His first paid show was at St Ann's Club. Over time, he slowly changed from being just a singer to a comedian. He became known for his funny version of the song "Green, Green Grass of Home".
During the 1970s, Shane appeared in many TV shows, often in small roles. A comedy writer named Jimmy Perry saw him in an episode of Coronation Street in 1979. Perry was very impressed and offered Shane a big role.
Famous TV Roles
Paul Shane was cast as Ted Bovis in a new comedy show called Hi-de-Hi!. This show was set in a holiday camp and became very popular. It ran from 1980 to 1988.
After Hi-de-Hi!, the same writers created another show called You Rang, M'Lord?. They asked Shane to play Alf Stokes in this new comedy. This show was also a success and ran until 1993.
In 1991, Paul Shane had his own show called Very Big Very Soon. He also appeared in other TV series like Oh, Doctor Beeching! between 1995 and 1997. Later, he had guest roles in popular shows such as Holby City and Emmerdale.
Other Performances
Paul Shane also performed in live theatre shows. He was in pantomimes, which are fun musical plays often performed around Christmas. In 2008, he played "Diesel Bob" in an episode of the detective show A Touch of Frost.
In 1981, Paul Shane was surprised on the TV show This Is Your Life. This show celebrates famous people's lives.
Personal Life
Paul Shane was married to Dorothy Shortt from 1961 until she passed away in 2001. They had three daughters together.
In 1984, he became a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats. This is a special charity group for people in show business.
In 2009, Paul Shane had heart surgery and recovered well. However, after a short illness, he passed away on 16 May 2013, at the age of 72. He died in a hospice in Rotherham, a place that provides care for people who are very ill. His funeral was held at Rotherham Minster. He was survived by his three daughters and six grandchildren.
