Paul de Foix (1528–1584) was an important French diplomat and church leader. He was the son of Jean de Foix, who was a count, and his wife Aldonce. Paul de Foix was known for his intelligence and skills in law and diplomacy.

He studied ancient Greek and Roman literature in Paris. He also studied law in Toulouse. After finishing his studies, he even taught law there. His lectures were very popular and helped him become well-known.

When he was just nineteen, Paul de Foix became a councillor in the parlement of Paris. This was a high court in France. At one point, he was suspected of supporting a group called the Huguenots, who were French Protestants. However, he was able to clear his name and regain the trust of the French royal family.

A Diplomat's Life

Paul de Foix had a busy career as a diplomat, representing France in other countries.

Missions to England and Scotland

In late 1561, he was sent as an ambassador to England. He stayed there for four years, working to build good relationships between France and England. While in England, he also traveled to Scotland in December 1561 to meet Mary, Queen of Scots.

Later Missions and Church Role

After his time in England, he was sent to Venice, an important city in Italy. He later returned to England to help arrange a possible marriage between Queen Elizabeth I and the Duke of Anjou, who later became King Henry III of France.

Paul de Foix continued to serve King Henry III on many important missions. In 1577, he became the archbishop of Toulouse, a major church position. In 1579, he was appointed ambassador to Rome, where he stayed until his death in 1584.

Paul de Foix was shown in the 1998 film Elizabeth. In the movie, he was played by the actor Eric Cantona.
