Early Career and First Awards

Paula van der Oest started her journey in filmmaking at the Dutch Film and Television Academy. In 1988, her final project, a short film called Zinderend, won a special prize called the Cannon Award.

After graduating, she worked as an assistant director for a few years. Then, in 1994, she began directing her own films. She made two short movies, Coma and Achilles en het zebrapad (Achilles and the Zebracrossing). For Coma, she won a Golden Calf award. This is one of the most important film awards in the Netherlands.

Making Feature Films

In 1996, Paula van der Oest directed her first long movie, De nieuwe moeder (The New Mother). Later, in 1998, she made De trip van Teetje (The Journey of Teetje). This film was about a tricky businessman who buys a Russian cargo ship.

Zus & Zo and the Oscar Nomination

In 2001, Paula van der Oest directed Zus & Zo. This film was inspired by a classic play called The Three Sisters. It was her first movie made for a wider audience. The film focused on realistic characters and their relationships, but it also had more humor than her earlier works. An English expert helped make some changes to the script. These changes helped the film get an Oscar nomination, which was a huge achievement!

Other Notable Works

After Zus & Zo, Paula van der Oest continued to create many different films.

  • Moonlight (2002): This was an English thriller that felt like a fairytale. It told the story of a 13-year-old girl and a boy who could swallow balloons, both around the same age. This film was shown at the 25th Moscow International Film Festival.
  • Madame Jeanette (2004): This movie was set in the Suriname community in the Amsterdam Bijlmer area. It was very popular there.
  • Verborgen gebreken (2004): This film was based on a book by the writer Renate Dorrestein.
