Early Work and Awards
After her studies, Paula worked as an assistant director. This means she helped the main director with many tasks on set. In 1994, she began directing her own films again. She made two short movies for a TV series: Coma and Achilles en het zebrapad. For Coma, she won a Golden Calf, which is a very important film award in the Netherlands. It was given for the best television drama.
Directing Feature Films
In 1996, Paula van der Oest directed her first full-length movie, De nieuwe moeder (The New Mother). Her husband at the time, Theu Boermans, acted in this film. She kept her focus on realistic characters and their relationships, but she also added more humor. An English writer helped make some changes to the script, which led to the film being nominated for an Oscar!
After Zus & Zo, she made several other interesting films:
- Moonlight (2002): This was an English thriller that told a fairytale-like story about a 13-year-old girl.
- Madame Jeannette (2004): This film was set in the Suriname community in Amsterdam and was very popular there.
