Pauline Armitage's Political Career
Starting in Local Politics
Pauline Armitage grew up in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. She became interested in politics at a young age. In 1969, she joined the Young Unionists, a group for young people interested in the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP).
Before becoming a politician, she served in the Ulster Defence Regiment. This was a part-time army regiment in Northern Ireland.
In 1985, Pauline was elected to the Coleraine Borough Council. This is like a local government for the Coleraine area. She represented the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) on the council.
Serving as Mayor
Pauline Armitage continued to serve on the Coleraine Council. From 1995 to 1997, she held an important role. She was the Mayor of Coleraine, leading the local council during that time.
Moving to the Assembly
In 1998, Pauline Armitage was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly. This is the main law-making body for Northern Ireland. She represented the East Londonderry area.
During her time in the Assembly, she sometimes voted differently from her party. For example, she supported a motion to exclude some other politicians from the government.
In 2001, she faced a difficult situation. She was suspended from her party, the UUP. This happened after she voted against the re-appointment of the party leader, David Trimble, as First Minister. The First Minister is like the head of the government in Northern Ireland.
After this, she continued to serve in the Assembly as an independent Unionist. This means she was still a unionist but not officially part of a specific party.
Joining a New Party
In June 2003, Pauline Armitage left the UUP. She then joined a different political group called the UK Unionist Party (UKUP).
Later that year, she ran for election again in East Londonderry. This time, she was representing the UKUP. However, she did not win enough votes to be re-elected to the Assembly. She left politics in 2005.
