George Robinson MBE (born 30 May 1941) is a former politician from Northern Ireland. He was a member of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). From 2003 to 2022, he served as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for the area of East Londonderry. Before becoming an MLA, he worked as a civil servant. He was also a local councillor for nearly 30 years. He represented the Limavady Town area on the Limavady Borough Council from 1985 until 2013.
Who is George Robinson?
George Robinson was born in Limavady, County Londonderry, on May 30, 1941. He was the oldest of eight children. His father, Joe, was a soldier who fought in both World War I and World War II. George had five brothers and two sisters. He helped look after his younger siblings from a young age.
He went to school at Limavady Technical College. During a difficult period in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles, he served in the army barracks.
Serving the Community in Limavady
George Robinson began his long career in public service in 1985. He was first elected to the Limavady Borough Council. This council helped manage local services and decisions for the Limavady area. He represented the Limavady Town area. He served as a councillor for almost 30 years, showing his dedication to his local community.
In June 2002, George Robinson was chosen to be the Mayor of Limavady Borough Council. During his time as Mayor, he welcomed a special visit from the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. He said that these were "special days in Northern Ireland."
A Career in Northern Ireland Politics
In 2003, George Robinson was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly. This is where laws are made for Northern Ireland. He became a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for the East Londonderry area. He was one of two DUP representatives from that area.
He continued to serve as an MLA until 2022. In December 2013, he stepped down as a local councillor. Edgar Scott took over his role on the Limavady Council.
On March 17, 2022, George Robinson announced that he would retire as an MLA. He said that his age was a reason for his decision. He mentioned that he felt "unbroken" and "undefeated" as he retired from politics.
