Pauline Small (born November 30, 1924 – died March 9, 2005) was a very important leader for the Crow Nation, also known as the Crow Tribe of Indians. She made history in 1966 by becoming the first woman ever elected to an official position in the Crow government.

Pauline served as the Vice-Secretary of the Crow Tribal Council from 1966 to 1972. She also held many other roles within the Crow Tribal Offices, often focusing on improving education for her community.

Early Life and Education

Pauline White Man Runs Him was born on the Crow Indian Reservation. This was in a place called Lodge Grass, in the state of Montana. She was the youngest of three children in her family.

Pauline grew up in the Valley of the Chiefs area on the reservation. Her grandfather was White Man Runs Him, a well-known figure in Crow history.

Marriage and Family Life

Pauline married Ivan James Small, Sr. He was a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Indians. They built their first home together in Busby, Montana.

Later, they moved to a family area called Packs The Hat. This place was in the Rotten Grass area of the reservation.

Working in Tribal Politics

Pauline Small was very active in the government of the Crow Tribe. In 1966, she was chosen to be the Vice-Secretary of the Tribal Council. This was a big deal because she was the first woman to hold any elected office in the Crow Nation.

She worked in this important role until 1972. After that, she continued to be involved in many different committees of the Tribal Council.

Pauline cared a lot about education for her people. She was a member of the Lodge Grass Board of Trustees. She even served as the Chair of this board for eight years. She also worked on the Crow Tribal Education Committee.

From 1996 to 2000, she was part of the 107th Committee of the Crow Tribal Council. Pauline was deeply involved with the Crow tribal government. She also strongly supported Indian rodeo events for 30 years.
