Paulo Moura (born July 15, 1932 – died July 12, 2010) was a famous Brazilian musician. He was known for playing the clarinet and the saxophone.
Paulo Moura was born in São José do Rio Preto, Brazil. His father was a band leader and wanted Paulo to become a tailor. But Paulo chose a different path. He studied music at the National Music School. He also played with the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra.
Paulo Moura made history as the first Black artist to become the main clarinet player in the Municipal Theatre Orchestra. He performed at a special Bossa Nova night at Carnegie Hall in 1962. He played alongside other great musicians like Sérgio Mendes. He also appeared on Cannonball Adderley's 1962 album, Cannonball's Bossa Nova.

Winning the Sharp Award
In 1992, he won the Sharp Award. This award recognized him as the most popular instrumentalist of the year.
Latin Grammy Winner
In 2000, Paulo Moura became the first Brazilian instrumentalist to win a Latin Grammy Award. This was a huge achievement for him and for Brazilian music. His CD Paulo Moura e Os Oito Batutas was even listed by Barnes & Noble as one of the top recommendations in 1998.
Contributions to Culture
Paulo Moura also worked to support culture in Brazil. From 1997 to 1999, he was part of the State Council of Culture in Rio de Janeiro. He was also a Councillor for the Federal Council of Music. He even served as the President of the Museum Foundation of Image and Sound.
Paulo Moura's Later Life
Paulo Moura passed away on July 12, 2010, just three days before his 78th birthday. He had been battling a type of cancer called lymphoma.
His Last Musical Gathering
Before he passed, Paulo Moura had one last informal music session on July 10, 2010. He played with friends and fellow musicians. These included David Feldman (musician), pt:Daniela Spielmann, pt:Marcello Gonçalves, pt:Gabriel Moura, pt:Humberto Araujo, and pt:Wagner Tiso.
Family Life
Paulo Moura was married to Halina Grynberg. They had two sons named Pedro and Domingos.
