Paulsdale is a special place in Mount Laurel Township, New Jersey. It was the birthplace and childhood home of Alice Paul. She was a very important leader in the Women's suffrage movement in the United States. This movement worked to get women the right to vote. Paulsdale was named a National Historic Landmark in 1991. This means it is a place of great historical importance.
Paulsdale: A Historic Home
The Paul family bought this property around 1883. It included a large farm of 173 acres (0.27 sq mi) and a farmhouse built in 1840. Alice Paul grew up here, learning about fairness and justice.
Changes Over Time
In the 1950s, the property was divided. Most of the farmland (167 acres (0.26 sq mi)) was sold for new houses. The smaller part (6 acres (260,000 sq ft)) included the historic house and farm buildings. This smaller part was also sold and became a private home for a while.
Paulsdale Today
In 1990, the Alice Paul Institute bought the house. They worked hard to restore it. Now, Paulsdale looks much like it did when Alice Paul lived there. It is now a historic house museum. This means visitors can explore the house and learn about Alice Paul's life.
The house is also the home of the Alice Paul Institute. The Institute works to keep Alice Paul's legacy alive. They teach young people about human rights and how to work for a fairer world. They want future generations to understand her fight for equality.
