Paulsdale is a special old house and museum in Mount Laurel Township, New Jersey. It was built around 1840. This house is famous because it was the birthplace and childhood home of Alice Paul. Alice Paul (1885-1977) was a very important leader. She fought for women's right to vote in the United States. Her hard work helped pass the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. This amendment gave women the right to vote! Paulsdale was recognized as a National Historic Place in 1989. Later, in 1991, it became a National Historic Landmark. This means it's a really important place in American history.

The Story of Paulsdale

The main house at Paulsdale was first built around 1800. A person named Benjamin Hooton built it. The Paul family bought the farm, which was about 173 acres, around 1883.

Alice Paul's Home Base

The property stayed with the Paul family until 1958. It was a kind of "home base" for Alice Paul. She was born here in 1885. Alice Paul spent much of her adult life traveling. She was always busy working for women's right to vote.

Paulsdale was a place she often came back to. She held important meetings there. She also planned strategies for her campaigns. The family sold the house in 1958 after her brother passed away.

Paulsdale Becomes a Museum

In the 1950s, the large property was split up. About 167 acres became farmland. The remaining 6 acres included the house and other farm buildings. The farmland later became a housing development. The smaller part, with the house, stayed a private home.

Then, in 1990, the Alice Paul Institute bought the house. The institute worked hard to restore the house. They wanted it to look like it did when Alice Paul lived there.

Today, Paulsdale is a historic house museum. It is also home to the Alice Paul Institute. The institute's goal is to keep Alice Paul's legacy alive. They want to teach future generations about human rights.
