Sadly, Potter died young, at just 28 years old, from a sickness called tuberculosis. Even so, he created about 100 paintings in his short life.

Life of Paulus Potter
Paulus Potter was born in Enkhuizen, a town in the Netherlands. He was baptized on November 20, 1625. When he was three years old, his family moved to Leiden. A few years later, in 1631, they moved to Amsterdam.
In Amsterdam, young Paulus learned to paint from his father, Pieter Symonsz Potter. His father was also a painter. For a while, his father made fancy gilded leather hangings.
Moving and Marriage
Potter became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Delft. This was a special group for artists. But by 1649, he moved to The Hague. He lived next to another famous painter, Jan van Goyen.
In July 1650, Potter married Adriana van Balckeneynde. Her father was a big building contractor in The Hague. He helped Paulus meet important people in Dutch society. One of these people was Amalia of Solms-Braunfels. She was part of the royal family and loved art. She bought one of Potter's paintings called The Farmyard.
Return to Amsterdam and Early Death
In May 1652, Potter moved back to Amsterdam. He was invited by Nicolaes Tulp, a very important doctor who owned some of Potter's paintings. Tulp was impressed by Potter's good manners. He asked Potter to paint a portrait of his son, Dirck Tulp, riding a horse.
Paulus Potter made his will in January 1653. He died a year later from tuberculosis, just two months after his 28th birthday.
Potter painted a self-portrait, which is a painting of himself. It is now in a private collection.
Famous Paintings
Potter's most famous painting is The Young Bull, painted around 1647. This painting is not the same as his other work called The Bull. The Young Bull was created after Potter made many drawings of animals in nature.
Today, The Young Bull is in the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague. Even though some people criticized this painting, it became very popular in the 1800s. People saw it as an early example of Romanticism, a style of art that focused on feelings and nature.
