Pavel Eljanov (born May 10, 1983) is a talented Ukrainian chess grandmaster. A grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can earn. Pavel has won two team gold medals and one individual silver medal at the Chess Olympiads, which are big international chess tournaments where teams from different countries compete.

He has also helped other top chess players prepare for important championships. For example, he was a "second" (a helper or coach) for Boris Gelfand in the World Chess Championship 2012 and for Magnus Carlsen in the World Chess Championship 2013. He also helped Mariya Muzychuk in the Women's World Chess Championship 2016.

Chess Career Highlights

Early Success and Tournaments

In 1999, when Pavel was a teenager, he was part of the Ukrainian youth team. They won the Under-16 Chess Olympiad in Artek, Ukraine. This was an early sign of his great talent!

In 2007, Pavel won the B group of the Corus Chess Tournament in the Netherlands. This was a big win that allowed him to play in an even stronger tournament the next year.

He also won the 2009 Bosna Chess Tournament in Sarajevo. This was a special tournament where six players played against each other twice.

Rising Through the Ranks

In May 2010, Pavel won a major event in Astrakhan, Russia, as part of the FIDE Grand Prix 2008–2010 series. Later that year, in August, he won the Politiken Cup in Copenhagen.

By September 2010, Pavel Eljanov was ranked number 6 in the world! This was a huge achievement, and he was also the top-ranked player in Ukraine.

More Victories

Pavel continued to win many strong tournaments. In February 2012, he tied for first place at the 11th Aeroflot Open. The next year, in February 2013, he won the Reykjavik Open in Iceland.

In September 2013, he won the 14th Anatoly Karpov International Tournament in Russia. The very next month, he won another important open tournament called the Chigorin Memorial.

World Cup and Other Achievements

In April 2014, Pavel won the B tournament of the Gashimov Memorial in Azerbaijan.

One of his most impressive performances was in the Chess World Cup 2015. He beat many strong players, including Alexander Grischuk and Hikaru Nakamura, to reach the semifinals! He was eventually defeated by Sergey Karjakin, who went on to win the whole event. Because of his great performance, Pavel qualified for the FIDE Grand Prix 2017 series.

In 2016, he won the Chess.com Isle of Man International tournament. He tied for first place with another top player, Fabiano Caruana, but won on a tiebreak.

Most recently, in July 2021, Pavel won the 48th International Dortmund Schachtage Deutschland Grand Prix.

Personal Life

Pavel Eljanov comes from a chess family. His father, Vladimir Eljanov, was also a chess master.

In April 2009, Pavel married Olena Dvoretska, who is also a chess player with the title of Woman International Master (WIM). They have a daughter who was born in 2011.

Pavel also studied law and graduated from the Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University.
