History of Paynesville
Paynesville was planned out and officially started in 1831. It was named after William Payne, a businessman from St. Louis.
A post office opened in Paynesville in 1833. It served the community for many years, finally closing in 1997.
The Meloan, Cummins & Co., General Store is an important building in Paynesville's history. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. This means it's a special place worth protecting because of its historical value.
