Park History

Early Days and the Peacock Inn

Charles and Isabella Peacock were among the first people to settle permanently in South Florida. They were grocers who came to Coconut Grove to open a hotel. Their hotel, built in 1883, was called Bay View House. It was the very first hotel on the mainland of Florida south of Palm Beach.

Later, it was renamed the Peacock Inn. This inn became a place where the first community meetings in Miami happened. Many visitors liked the area and decided to stay. This is how Coconut Grove started. It was South Florida's first mainland community.

The Peacock Inn closed in 1902. The building then became the Lake Placid School. The school moved away in 1925, and the building was torn down in 1926. After that, the land became a city park. When the hotel closed, Ralph Munroe opened Camp Biscayne nearby. This gave visitors another place to stay.

Becoming a Public Park

The city of Miami bought the land in 1934. They paid $63,500 for it. They turned it into a public park called Coconut Grove Bayfront Park. In 1973, the park was renamed Peacock Park. This was to honor the Peacock family who started the inn.

During the 1960s, Peacock Park and the Coconut Grove area became very popular. It was a center for young people and the youth counterculture. Many concerts and gatherings were held there. The area was like the Greenwich Village neighborhood in New York.

What You Can Do at the Park

Peacock Park has many cool things to do. There's a baseball field for games. You can also find a basketball court and tennis courts. Kids can have fun on the playground. There's even a special area for peacocks. If you like skateboarding, there's a skatepark too!

Next to Peacock Park is Kenneth M. Myers Park. This park is managed by the city along with Peacock Park. It's home to the Coconut Grove Sailing Club. The Dinner Key Marina complex is also right next to the park's shore.
