Peasemeal, also known as pea flour, is a special type of flour made from yellow peas that have been roasted. This roasting process helps unlock more of the good stuff inside, like protein and starch, making it even more nutritious! Peasemeal has a brownish-yellow color because of the roasting, which is a bit like how sugar turns brown when you heat it (this is called caramelization). It can be fine like regular flour or a bit gritty.

What is Peasemeal?

Peasemeal is a unique flour made from yellow field peas. It is similar to maize meal (cornmeal) and can be used in many ways. People use it for baking, making porridge, and quick breads.

How is Peasemeal Made?

Traditionally, peas for peasemeal were roasted first. Then, they were ground three times using water-powered stone mills. This special roasting step helps to make the protein and starch in the peas easier for our bodies to use.

Why is Peasemeal Good for You?

Peasemeal is a healthy food choice. It is packed with protein, which helps your body grow and repair itself. It also contains starch, which gives you energy. Because of these benefits, yellow pea flour is becoming popular again.

Peasemeal in History and Today

Peasemeal has a long and interesting history, especially in Great Britain. It was a common food for many years.

Traditional Scottish Dishes

In Scotland, peasemeal is still used for traditional dishes. Two well-known examples are brose and bannocks.

  • Brose is a simple dish, much like a thick porridge. You just add boiling water or broth to peasemeal and eat it right away. People often add butter, pepper, salt, sugar, or even raisins for extra flavor.
  • Bannocks are a type of flat, round bread. They are often made with peasemeal, giving them a unique taste and texture.

The Revival of Peasemeal

The production of peasemeal almost disappeared in the 1970s. However, thanks to a man named Fergus Morrison, it made a comeback! He took over an old water-powered mill in Golspie, Scotland. Because many people wanted peasemeal again, he brought the mill and its production back to life.

Modern Uses of Pea Flour

Today, yellow pea flour is gaining popularity again. This is because it is very nutritious and also good for the environment (sustainable). It can be used to replace all or part of wheat flour in many baked goods. You might find pea flour in cakes, cookies, and even bread.
