Pedro Subijana Reza, born on November 5, 1948, is a famous Spanish chef. He is known for his amazing restaurant called Akelarre, located in San Sebastián, Spain. In 2006, his restaurant earned its third Michelin star, which is a very special award for restaurants.

Early Life of a Chef

Pedro Subijana started his journey in cooking by studying at the Casa de Campo Hospitality School in Madrid. After that, he went to the Luis Irizar Cooking School in Zarautz. He even taught there later on!

Before joining Akelarre, he gained experience working in different places. He cooked in towns like Tolosa and Hernani. He also worked in big cities like Madrid and Estella. Finally, he arrived at the Akelarre restaurant to work as a cook.

Pedro Subijana's Career

In 1975, Pedro Subijana became the head chef at Akelarre. His talent was quickly recognized by food guides. His restaurant joined famous groups like Relais & Chateaux and Les Grandes Tables du Monde. These groups include some of the best hotels and restaurants in the world.

Teaching and Promoting Food

Pedro believes it's important to teach people about good nutrition in schools. He has given many talks and lessons about cooking. He has shared his knowledge at schools and institutions across Europe and America.

He has also helped start important cooking movements in Spain. One of these was the New Basque Cuisine, which began between 1976 and 1978. He also helped create Euro-Toques in 1986. This group brings together top European chefs. Pedro held important roles in Euro-Toques, including being the International President. He stepped down from this role in April 2018.

Pedro Subijana also helped create the Basque Culinary Center in San Sebastián. This is a very important cooking school. He is also a teacher at the University of Navarre.

Television Show

In 1992, Pedro Subijana started his own television show. It was called La cocina de Pedro Subijana (Pedro Subijana's Kitchen). The show aired on Euskal Telebista and had more than 1,400 episodes! He taught many people how to cook delicious meals.

Awards and Recognition

Pedro Subijana has received many awards for his amazing cooking. Here are some of them:

  • 1978: He received his first Michelin Star.
  • 1979: He won the National Gastronomy Award for Best Chef.
  • 1982: He received his second Michelin Star.
  • 2006: His restaurant received its third and highest Michelin Star. This is a very rare and special award!
  • 2015: He received the Tambor de Oro (Golden Drum) award from San Sebastián. This is a high honor from his home city.
  • 2016: He was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts. This award comes from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports.

Pedro Subijana is also a member of Relais Châteaux, a collection of luxury hotels and restaurants.
