Pedubast I was a king from ancient Egypt. He was part of the 23rd Dynasty. This dynasty was made up of Libyan rulers. He became king around 835 BC or 824 BC. He ruled for about 25 years.

How Did Pedubast I Become King?

Pedubast I first became a local ruler in Thebes. This happened around the 11th year of another king, Takelot II. Later, he became the main king in Thebes. This was in the 8th year of King Shoshenq III. His longest known reign was 23 years. This was the same as the 31st year of Shoshenq III.

Did Pedubast I Get Along with Other Kings?

Shoshenq III ruled Lower Egypt. This was the northern part of the country. Pedubast I ruled Upper Egypt. They were not direct enemies. They might have even worked together. Shoshenq III's son, Pashedbast B, built a gate at Karnak. He named his father as king. But he dated his work to Pedubast I's reign. This suggests some agreement between them.

What Challenges Did Pedubast I Face?

Pedubast I had a big rival. This was Takelot II and later Osorkon B. They were also Libyan kings in Upper Egypt. When Pedubast I took power, it started a long civil war. This war lasted for almost 30 years. It was a fight between two groups. Each group had its own High Priests of Amun.

Who Were the High Priests?

Pedubast I's side had Harsiese B as High Priest. Later, Takelot E took over this role. Osorkon B was the main opponent to Pedubast I. This long fight is mentioned in a famous text. It is called the Chronicle of Prince Osorkon. After Pedubast I, Shoshenq VI became king.

A special bronze statue of Pedubast I exists today. It is a torso, meaning the upper part of the body. This statue is very detailed. It is on display in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, Portugal. Many people think it is a masterpiece. It shows the amazing art of the Third Intermediate Period in Egypt.

Why Is This Statue So Special?

This bronze statue is very rare. There are not many large bronze statues of Egyptian kings. It is the only large one known from the Third Intermediate Period. The statue has special writings on it. These are called cartouches. They show Pedubast I's royal names. One name means "Powerful is the justice of Ra, the chosen one of Amun". Another name means "Beloved of Amun, the gift of Bastet".

Where Did the Statue Come From?

We don't know exactly where the statue was found. But it was first recorded in 1880. It was part of a collection owned by Count Grigory Stroganoff. He was from a famous Russian family of art collectors.
