Margaret Ann "Peggy" McCay (born November 3, 1927 – died October 7, 2018) was an American actress. She had a long career that started in 1949. She acted in plays, on television, in soap operas, and in movies.
Peggy McCay was famous for two main roles. She played Vanessa Dale on the CBS soap opera Love of Life from 1951 to 1955. Later, she became well-known as Caroline Brady on NBC's Days of Our Lives. She played Caroline from 1983 until 2016.

About Her Life and Career
Peggy McCay was born in Manhattan, New York, on November 3, 1927. She was the only child of Catherine and Michael Joseph McCay. Her father owned a company that built schools.
Peggy went to Saint Walburga's Convent School. She then studied at Barnard College, finishing in June 1949. After her father passed away suddenly, Peggy and her mother managed his construction business for a while.
Starting Her Acting Journey
After college, Peggy joined a theater group in Texas led by Margo Jones. She learned to play many different roles in plays. She also studied acting with a famous teacher named Lee Strasberg in New York. Later, she helped set up his acting studio on the West Coast.
In 1956, Peggy acted in an off-Broadway play called Uncle Vanya. She played the role of Sonya. For this role, she won an Obie Award for Best Young Actress. This award is given for excellent performances in off-Broadway shows. The next year, she also appeared in the movie version of Uncle Vanya.
Her Soap Opera Roles
Peggy got her first big role in a soap opera called Love of Life. It started in 1951, and she played the main character, Vanessa Dale. She stayed on the show for four years, leaving in 1955 to try other acting jobs.
Many years later, Peggy McCay became very famous for playing Caroline Brady on Days of Our Lives. She first appeared on the show in February 1983. In 1985, she signed a long-term contract. She played Caroline regularly for more than 30 years. Her last time playing Caroline was on August 24, 2016.

Peggy McCay appeared in many other TV shows and movies throughout her career. In 1957, she was on Perry Mason. She also appeared in the TV series Maverick in 1959.
In 1962, she had a main role in the TV series Room for One More. She played Anna Perrott Rose, a foster mother. She also starred in the movie Lad, A Dog that same year.
Peggy guest-starred on many popular shows. These included The Andy Griffith Show in 1963 and Laramie. She also appeared on General Hospital from 1966 to 1970. In the 1970s, she was in How the West Was Won.
In 1991, Peggy McCay won a Primetime Emmy Award for her role in The Trials of Rosie O'Neill. This award was for being an outstanding guest actress in a drama series.
Her Passing
Peggy McCay passed away on October 7, 2018. She died from natural causes at her home in Los Angeles. She never got married or had children.
