Early Life and Work

During the American Revolutionary War, Peleg Nott drove a cart. He delivered supplies for the army. After the war, Wadsworth trusted Nott with a big job. Nott was put in charge of Wadsworth's farm. The farm was in West Hartford. People said Nott was a "first-rate feller." They also noted his neat clothes and military-like posture. Everyone knew how much Wadsworth trusted him.

Becoming Free

Soon after Peleg Nott was elected Black Governor, something important happened. Jeremiah Wadsworth freed Nott and his wife. This meant they were no longer enslaved. Wadsworth also gave Nott some land. This land was near where the Wadsworth Athenaeum is today.

Where is Peleg Nott Buried?

We do not have records of when Peleg Nott was born or when he died. It is believed he was buried in an unmarked grave. This grave is in Hartford's Ancient Burying Ground.
