Pemuco's Population

The 2002 census showed that Pemuco had 8,821 residents. This included 4,578 men and 4,243 women.

About 3,844 people lived in the town itself, which is called an urban area. The rest, 4,977 people, lived in the countryside, known as rural areas. Pemuco covers an area of about 562.7 square kilometers.
How Pemuco is Governed

The Local Leaders
As a commune, Pemuco has a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, who is like the mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Julio Muñoz Salazar. He belonged to the PDC.

For the Senate, Pemuco is part of the 13th senatorial constituency. This area is called Biobío-Coast. The senators representing this area were Victor Pérez Varela and Mariano Ruiz-Esquide Jara.
