Pence is a small community located in Warren County, Indiana, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's part of Jordan Township.

The Story of Pence: How It Began

Pence was started in September 1902 by a man named Frank R. Pence. He bought about 40 acres of land to create this new community.

Early Life in Pence

In 1903, Pence became quite special. It was the smallest town in the entire United States to have a central water system! This was a big deal back then.

In the early 1900s, Pence was a busy place. It had many different businesses, including:

  • a place to store grain
  • a blacksmith shop (where metal was shaped)
  • a welding and machine shop
  • a lumber yard
  • a coal yard
  • the Bank of Pence (which closed in the 1920s)
  • a hotel (which also held the post office for a while)
  • restaurants
  • a general store and grocery stores
  • a hardware store
  • a weekly newspaper
  • a funeral home
  • a jewelry store

By 1913, about 150 people lived in Pence.

Sports in Pence

Pence even had its own baseball team! They played from 1910 all the way until 1955. There was also a basketball team, known as the Pence Aces.

The Post Office

The community had its own post office. It opened on October 12, 1903, and served the residents until April 5, 1957.

Where is Pence Located?

Pence is located very close to the border between Indiana and Illinois, less than a mile east of the state line. It's also about a quarter mile from Jordan Creek. This creek flows southwest towards the Vermilion River.

You can find Pence on County Road 300 North. If you follow this road into Illinois, it will take you to the town of Rossville, which is about 9 miles to the west.
