Pendleton got its start a long time ago. A post office opened here in 1833. It stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1951. The village was most likely named after J. W. Pendleton, who was an early postmaster (the person in charge of the post office).
The village was officially planned out, or platted, in 1858. This happened when the railroad tracks were built to reach that spot, helping the community grow.
