Penfield Reef facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Penfield Reef is a group of rocks and sand that sticks out about a mile into Long Island Sound from the coast of Fairfield, Connecticut. It's called "partially submerged" because sometimes you can see it, and sometimes it's hidden just under the water. This makes it a very tricky and dangerous spot for boats, even with the Penfield Reef Lighthouse nearby to warn them.

What is Penfield Reef?

Penfield Reef is a natural formation made of rocks and sand. It's located in Long Island Sound, which is a large body of water between Connecticut and Long Island, New York. The reef is known for being a challenging area for ships and boats because it's not always visible, especially during high tide. The Penfield Reef Lighthouse was built to help guide boats safely around this hidden danger.

A Look Back: How the Reef Formed

Hundreds of years ago, Penfield Reef wasn't a reef at all! It was actually a peninsula, which is a piece of land almost completely surrounded by water but connected to the mainland on one side. Over time, the strong waves and currents of Long Island Sound slowly wore away the land. This process is called erosion.

As the land eroded, the peninsula first became a group of small islands. Eventually, these islands were worn down even further, turning into what is now known as a shoal. A shoal is an area of shallow water where the bottom is made of sand or rocks.

Humans and Erosion

People also played a part in the reef's erosion. In the past, sand and stones were collected from the reef. These materials were used as "ballast" on ships. Ballast is heavy material, like rocks or sand, placed in the bottom of a ship to make it more stable and prevent it from tipping over. Taking away these materials made the erosion happen even faster.

The Story of the Cows

Long ago, when the area was still a peninsula, cows used to graze there, eating the grass. Even after the land eroded, two groups of rocks on the reef were named "Cows" and "Calves." This was done to remember the early history of the area and the animals that once roamed there.

Fishing at Penfield Reef

Despite its dangers, Penfield Reef is a very popular spot for fishing. Many different types of fish like to gather around reefs because they provide shelter and food. Anglers (people who fish) often come here to catch fish like bluefish, flounder, and striped bass. It's known as an ideal place to cast a line and try your luck!

A Special Rescue

Penfield Reef is also famous for being the site of a very important event in rescue history. It was where the very first helicopter rescue of a civilian (someone not in the military) ever happened. It was also the first time a winch was used in a helicopter rescue. A winch is a machine that uses a rope or cable to lift or pull heavy things, like people from the water. This event showed how useful helicopters could be for saving lives!
