Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Pennacook (also called Pawtucket) were a group of Native American people. They lived in North America, mainly along the Merrimack River. This river flows through what is now New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The Pennacook spoke a language from the Algonquian family.

When English colonists began to settle in their lands, the Pennacook faced many challenges. Some Pennacook people moved north to join the Abenaki tribe. Others moved west to live with different tribes. Those who moved west often faced danger from the colonists. The groups who moved north eventually joined with other tribes who had also been forced to leave their homes in New England.
